This very charismatic actor became one of the main interpreters of Eugene O'Neill's plays and one of the most precious names in the song during the first half of the 20th century. He also generated contempt and public controversy for much of his career as a staunch defender of human rights during the Cold War era. In 1925, Paul gave his first singing recital and also made his film debut in Body and Soul (1925), a rather dark melodrama which was nevertheless ahead of its time in its depictions of black characters. Radio and recordings helped to spread his name in foreign waters. His resonant bass was a highlight of the London production of "Show Boat", especially with his powerful interpretation of "Ol' Man River". He stayed in London to play the role of Shakespeare's "Othello" in 1930 (at the time, no American company hired him), and again played an important role in a highly controversial production. Paul caused a slight stir by sharing the lead with a white actress, Peggy Ashcroft, who played the role of Desdemona. At this time, Paul starred in the British film Borderline (1930), a silent film that dealt heavily with racial themes, and then returned to the stage in O'Neill's play "The Hairy Ape" in 1931.
