Born on: 13 Jul 1936 , Bamako, Mali  - France 17 Apr 2010
Kouyaté started out as a griot in the Mandingo country before becoming an international football player (a professional player until 1966 and captain of the Burkina Faso football team), a teacher and then an actor. In 1966, he accepted to play a play at the request of his friend Boubacar Dicko. He is known for his collaboration with Peter Brook in the adaptation of the Mahabharata in 1989. His roles in the films La Genese by Cheick Oumar Sissoko and Little Senegal by Rachid Bouchareb made him known to the general public. Kouyaté is one of the greatest contemporary African actors. In 1997, he joins Jean-Louis Sagot-Duvauroux, Alioune Ifra Ndiaye and Habib Dembélé to found a structure of promotion and literary and artistic creation, the Mandeka Theatre. In 1998, he directed an adaptation of Antigone with the Mandeka Théâtre. He is the father of director Dani Kouyaté and storyteller Hassane Kassi Kouyaté. |
