Mos Def, whose real name is Dante Terrell Smith, is an actor, rapper and producer. Mos Def began his music career with the short-lived group Urban Thermo Dynamics with his brother DCQ and sister Ces. Despite being signed to Payday Records, the group only recorded two singles and their first album, Manifest Destiny, was not released until 1994. In 1996, Mos Def emerged as a solo artist, collaborating with De La Soul and Da Bush Babees, before releasing his first single, "Universal Magnetic," which became a hit in the American hip-hop underground.
