As an actor, he appeared in The Iceman Cometh on Broadway, for which he won a Theatre World Award, and in the Chicago remake, where he played the crooked lawyer Billy Flynn, in 2000 and 2003.
Peters is known to viewers for his role as Inspector Lester Freamon in the popular HBO series The Wire. Peters also appears in HBO's mini-series The Corner, as well as in the FX series Damages as Dave Pell.
Peters also appeared in the HBO series Treme as Albert Lambreaux. He also appears in Love at first sight in Notting Hill, K-PAX - The man who comes from afar, Mona Lisa, The Color of Crime, Nativity! and Marley & Me.
