Born on: 18 Mar 1970 , New Jersey  -
Queen Latifah, whose real name is Dana Elaine Owens, grew up in a police family with her father and older brother. Her stage name Queen Latifah was given to her when she was 8 years old. She started her career in the 80's with the group 'Ladies Fresh'. In 1987 she recorded a demo that she presented to production companies, and in 1988 she signed with the company 'Tommy Boy' under the name of Queen Latifah. At that time only Mc Lyte and Queen Latifah were respected in the macho world of American Hip Hop. She made her screen debut in 1991 with a small role in 'Jungle Fever' by Spike Lee. She then went on to play a number of films, always in small roles, until 2002 when she was given the role of a prison guard in the musical 'Chicago', which even won her the Oscar for best actress in March 2003. Recently she became a model for the lingerie line 'Curvation' specialized in large sizes. |
