Born in Mexico City, Lupita Amondi Nyong'o returned to Kenya before the age of one. Lupita began her primary education at Loreto Convent Msongari in Nairobi, which she left at the age of eleven to join Rusinga Schools, also in Nairobi. It is in this school that she began to take an interest in drama, thanks to her English teacher and her passion for theater.
At the age of 14, she auditioned for a role in Romeo and Juliet at the Kenya National Theatre, produced by the Phoenix Players, and, beyond her expectations, was cast as Juliet.
